FAMILY TREE LAYOUT - MICHAEL DOYLE - RACHELL WILSON

The Eglinton Ironworks Village, Kilwinning, Ayrshire
Built about 1850 and occupied until the 1930's

Behind the Store block in the foreground is the Double Row, which contained 43 two-apartment houses. The kitchen, which contained two beds, measured 12 x 10 feet, while the other room was only 10 x 8½ feet. The Cross Row, which ran across the top of the square, contained 15 similar houses. Running down the right hand side is the Single Row (so called because the houses had only one-room 17 x 10 feet) which contained 60 houses. In all, 128 houses without a break looked in towards each other across the square and on to the outhouses, which were only 15 feet from the front doors. Each outhouse contained one dry closet for each four households and one washing house for every eight. Behind the single Row was the Brick Row which contained 34 houses. Rents in 1913 were about 6 shillings per month.
