Hi Alec, The family story is that James Gibson's[P135] older brother (no name) lived at Gibston, Stair, near Mauchline, Ayr. The brother inherited the family property and was very wealthy. James quarrelled with him and left, never allowing the families to meet.
It is thought that James went to Ireland where he met and married Margaret Louis (Lewis), of French ancestry, whose forbears were Huguenots. The marriage could have taken place in Scotland.
For a time James Gibson held the temporary position of Forester at Glenhead, Kildrennan Estate, Barhill, Ayrshire, on the River Dusk. There was a dam on the river, just in front of the house. Here Lewis Gibson [P450] was born.
The family moved to an estate at Martnaham Muir, later known as Whitestones, then Dunwoodie. Hollybush was the nearest railway station.
James & Margaret retired to Boghead. James was known for his beautiful garden where he grew prize flowers and vegetables. They are buried in the old Parish Church graveyard at Coylton, along with four of their children, two James and two Johns.
There you have it. Now I have found myself a puzzle. Both Lewis Gibson [P450] and his brother David gave their mother's name as Margaret Allen on their marriage certificates. I know that Lewis knew his mother's name (Margaret Louis/Lewis) as most of the above information has come from him. I also know that I have the right certificates as every thing else matches up.

Hi Alec
Lewis Gibson, your ref P450, was sent to Queensland, Australia to find his two brothers who were already there. One of the brothers was David (born 1842), I have been unable to find the other. Lewis was 20 years old, he went on the ship Castle Eden at a cost of 15 pounds, arriving 4th September 1864.
Lewis Gibson married Agnes McClymont Cherry on 9th Feb 1871 at the Rockhampton Presbyterian Church, Portcurtis Road, Rockhampton, Queensland. The minister was the Rev Jonas Carson.
Agne Cherry was born at Girvan, Ayshire 14th May 1853. Her parents were Jonas Cherry and Mary Anne Thornton.
David Gibson married Mary Cherry, sister of Agnes, 4th August, 1868, same church, Rev Alex Smith.
Lewis and Agnes Gibson moved to New Zealand, arriving in Christchurch 25th October 1881. Lewis worked as a railway guard. They appear to have moved around a lot as their many children were born in various towns in the South Island, NZ. Some were born in Queensland. I'll give more details if you are interested.
Lewis and Agnes Gibson were my great grandparents. They are buried in the Oamaru Cemetery.
One of their daughters, Louisa Lewis (Lulu) married JG Dunn. They went to Scotland in 1924 and visited various relatives. I have transcripts of Lulu's letters home. One was wriiten from the home of Mrs Lamont, 55 High Street, Ayr.
Also have a photo of a photo of James and Margaret Lewis Gibson.
Regards,
Bev Thickett
