6.August.2000 from Derek Thom: I think I may be related via William GREGG {M} [P134] = Jane THOM {F} [P135]. My Jane is the daughter of Archibald Thom (1762-1832) and Margaret Candlish(1766-1837), my gt,gt,gt,gt, grand parents. Jane was born in Maybole , Ayrshire 21st of August 1808 (Margaret was possibly visiting relatives) but christened in Dalrymple, the family home. Archibald was a joiner and with Margaret emigrated with other children to Ontario, Canada c.1830 and died there soon after.
Hope this is useful. If anyone has followed up William and Jane, I would love to hear from them. Cheers from Derek Thom, Wolverhampton (England) U.K. derek.331thom@btinternet.com

Email from Melanie Chappel, December 2018:
Hi there,
I've recently established a connection to the Gregg family through Sarah Gregg, born 1817 to James Gregg and Sarah McMurray.
Sarah had a daughter Jane who is my 2x Great Grandmother.
Unfortunately, Sarah's story is not a good one. She was convicted on 28th September 1847 for administering a lethal dose of laudanum to her 11 day old child
and sentenced to 14 years transportation to Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania, Australia) for the crime of culpable murder.
A thesis has been published by a student of the Univerity of Leicester (Alison Brown) entitled "Social History of Scottish Homicide 1836-1869" which includes excerpts of Sarah's Case (<https://lra.le.ac.uk/?author_page=1>).
Sarah arrived in Hobart, Tasmania on the 6th August 1848 aboard the ship "Tory". Her indent stated she was a native of Ayshire and her relations back home were brothers William and George and sisters Agnes, Jane, Lilly and Marion.
She also gives the name John Moor (sic) the "father of my child" who is also cited in the above thesis.
Sarah's convict files can be found at <https://linctas.ent.sirsidynix.net.au/client/en_AU/names/search/results?qu=Sarah&qu=Gregg>
Sarah had two daughters to fathers unknown whilst serving her sentence - Sarah born in 1850 who died 14 days later and Mary Ann in 1854 who also appears to have died.
Sarah was given permission to marry Thomas Jordan (alias Hibbert) in 1856 but their marriage appears not to have eventuated. However they did go on to have four children together, all of them registered with no Christian names.
A female in February 1859 (my GG Grandmother Jane who was actually born earlier in 1856), a male in September 1859 (confirmed as son Thomas who died in November 1860), a male in December 1861 and another male in December 1862.
One of these last two males is named James Jordan who died in 1902.
Sarah herself died on 27th December 1873 after falling asleep in an abandoned hut in a drunken stupour and dying of severe burns after a fire started.

The inquest on the body was commenced on Monday, and was cotiinued yesterday
