He volunteered in 1914 for war service, signing on for at least 4 years as a Special Reservist. He was seconded to the Second King Edwards Horse Corps, and based with the Northumberland Fusiliers. He would probably have been based up north and responsible for coastal defence, and being a farmer, was unable to join the regular army. He would be required to help with food provision, and horse training of new army recruits. It doesn't show if he served abroad, but , being an experienced horse man, quite possibly might have. However he appears to have been absent from Home during WW1.
