August 2005:
Hi Alec. Below is a copy of an email I sent to a McCargow researcher recently that deals with the descendants of Charles McCargow (the medical practitioner), son of William McCargow and Agnes Gregg. Hope this is helpful for someone Regards. Jeff Higgins
Charles McCargow was the youngest of 8 known children born to William McCargow (a weaver ) and Agnes Gregg. He was born 15 Feb 1812 at Jedburgh Mill, Barr parish, and baptised into the Est Church of Scotland on the 17 Feb 1812.
Charles married Agnes Wilson, banns were proclaimed in the Est Church of Scotland, Barr parish on the 11 Aug 1838 and read the following 2 Sundays (the 12th & 19th August), they would have married soon after. There were at least 6 children
1. Agnes McCargow born 04 Feb 1839 at Barr, bapt 10 Feb 1839 at Barr. (the only child with descendants)
2. William McCargow born c.Mar 1841 probably in Maybole.
3. Jane McCargow born c.1847 at Maybole.
4. Janet McCargow born c.1849 at Girvan.
5. Thomas McCargow born 17 Mar 1851 at Girvan.
6. Annie McCargow born c.Nov 1854 at Girvan.
Charles died, from TB, at Girvan on 19 Dec 1854. He was a medical practitioner (Licentiate of Faculty of Physicians Glasgow).
Most of Charles and Agnes' children died young;
William was not with the family in the 1851 census, suggesting he had died.
Jane died, aged 13 years, at Mark farm in Barr parish on 27 May 1860 (at the home of her uncle John McWhirter, John married Charles' sister Ann McCargow). The cause of death was Disease of the Lungs. Jane is the mystery "Joha" in the 1851 census. The census enumerator made an error when copying the census schedules, at first he wrote John McCargow, then realised his error (possibly when it came time to write the age in the female column) and overwrote the 'hn' in John with an 'ne', the end result is that it looks like Joha.
Janet died sometime before 1855.
Thomas died, aged 4 years, at Dalrymple St, Girvan on 02 Apr 1856. The cause of death was Consumption (8 months) and the informant was Agnes McCargow (sister)
Annie died, aged 16 months, at Dalrymple St, Girvan on 03 Mar 1856. The cause of death was Cold Fever and the informant was Agnes McCargow (sister)
On 28 May 1859 Agnes McCargow (Wilson) and her daughter Agnes McCargow sailed from Liverpool aboard the "Commodore Perry" bound for Australia. They arrived at Melbourne on 25 Aug 1859 as "assisted immigrants". from the passenger list for that voyage....
