Margaret GREIG
Alias Margaret RAE
Alias Margaret GALBRAITH
Born 1806, Dalmellington?
Christened 13 May 1806, Dalmellington Ayrs
OPR DALMELLINGTON: 'Margaret Gregg.-John Gregg weaver had a daughter baptised named Margaret 13th May 1806' Mother not named on SCR but same d.o.b
Margaret married James Rae in 1831 but is recorded as having an illigitimate? child in 1842:-
1) OPR DALMELLINGTON:' Macadam Galbraith natural child of Margaret Gregg or Mrs. Rae born 21st August 1842'.
Margaret may well have been a widow in 1842 when MacAdam was born
A Margaret Gregg is also recorded as having an illegitimate child in 1843.
2) OPR DALMELLINGTON:' Alexander natural child of Margaret Gregg the father of whom she declared to be Alex. Willett weaver. The child was born on ? and baptised in the sessions on 5th Feb. 1843 to herself by the name of above. By Mr Houston minister here'.
The two births are only 6 months apart so possibly there were two Margaret Gregg's involved?
Born 21 Aug 1842, Dalmellington Ayrs
A Macadam Galbraith died in 1854 at The charge of the Heavy brigade at Balaclava in 1854. Poem to him appeared Ardrossan/Saltcoats Herald 1861 Dalmellington Section. (Uncertain if same person)

Hello - Just curious if anyone has found out anything new on MacADAM GALBRAITH son to Margaret Gregg (or Greig) Rae? I am a direct descendant of Macadam through my mother. He was my g-g-grandfather.
On his death certificate his FATHER listed as MacADAM Galbraith, Army Sergeant (deceased) and Margaret Gregg Rae Galbraith (deceased) however I cannot find any record of their marriage. 1851 census has Macadam living with Margaret Rea (spelling wrong), James and Jean (or Jane). I have found another son to James and Margaret named John 1833 however I cannot find any death record for James Sr or John (son) Rae so don't know what happened to them.
Maybe just a co-incidence, but there was a John Galbraith and family that lived across the street from Margaret in the 1851 census. It appears his mother and sister lived next door.
Also odd, I found a Macadam Galbraith age 15 in the 1841 census the year before my Macadam was born. What is interesting is that he was a baker and Margaret's son James and Macadam grew up to be master bakers! Does any of this mean anything to anyone?
Much thanks, Gael in Florida, US. egmsam@yahoo.com
