James Married Lucinda Morton in 1846 at Crawford County, Ark USA
The Goodspeed Publishing Co., USA. 1889. BIOGRAPHIES.
James Greig (deceased) was born in Ayr, Scotland, in 1814. When a lad he was apprenticed to learn the stone-cutter's trade, which he afterward followed, and was considered a finished workman. When about twenty-one years of age he set sail for America, and, landing in New York, spent some years in the Eastern States. Working his way westward, in 1844 he came to Crawford County, Ark., and two years later married Lucinda Morton. This lady is a daughter of Andrew Morton, was born in Illinois in 1826, and came to this county with her parents in 1831.
After his marriage Mr. Greig turned his attention to farming, in which he was reasonably successful. Although he enjoyed but very limited educational advantages during his youth, his fondness for books caused him to become a well-informed man, and in 1874-75 he was elected by the Democrats to represent Crawford County in the Legislature.
He was a Methodist in religion, and a member of the Masonic fraternity. His death occurred in 1878. His wife also belonged to the Methodist Church, and to them the following children were born: Agnes, wife of W. S. Williams, a farmer of this county; Elizabeth (deceased), wife of D. E. C. Williams, farmer; J. Howard and William W., who now lives at home; Martha A., wife of A. E. Lewis, a blacksmith; Hamlet, a farmer, husband of Julia Hainey. All of Mr. Greig's sons are staunch Democrats, like their father.

When the British Government wanted to take over Fanning Island for a cable station the Greig family sold out their rights and they all retired to New Zealand.
1892 Ayr Observer reveals:- Captain Greig's death was caused by gangrene, which set in after he had his left foot amputated.
From The Article 'The King of Fanning Island': Ayr Observer, Tuesday 16th August 1892. The obituary notice is taken from the San Francisco Examiner of 29th July 1892, and is also reprinted in the Ayr Advertiser, Thursday 18th August 1892, and Ayrshire Post, Friday 19th August 1892. The San Francisco Examiner belonged in 1892 to William Randolph Hearst, the model for Citizen Kane: it was his first paper, bought in 1887, when he was 24.
