OPR TARBOLTON 1841: 'William Gregg from Failford Hospital was interred at Tarbolton 19th May 1841'.
First census in Scotland was 6 June 1841 just too late to include him. William's age would have been 75 when he died [assuming the birth details and parents accredited to him are correct-1997 Alec Gregg].
William's name was spelled 'Gregg' at the time of his death.
William was the son of James Greg and Janet Henderson as above. Both William and his father James are known to have been 'Dancing Masters, 'Master of Manners' and Musicians.
THE GREGG FIDDLE: William is recorded to have been a 'Dancing Master' and 'Master of Manners' and musician, and is generally credited as having been the Dance Master and fiddle tutor to ROBERT BURNS at the Tarbolton Bachelors Club in the 1770's. A fiddle said to be the one used by William was presented to the Scottish National Trust in 1997 by the late Major John Weir, who acquired the long 'lost' fiddle from a local source in Tarbolton, Ayrshire.
[Note Alec Gregg Sep 2001] - I feel that this William, taking nothing away from his own talents, was too young to have been the Dance Master and fiddle tutor to Burns, and it is more likely that it was his father James who should be credited as such. James too was reported in various articles after his death in 1817, to be a " Master of Manners, eminent teacher of dancing, remarkably skilled in musick(sic), and performed with great taste and execution on the violin, a taste for painting, mechanics, and natural history, made and improved telescopes, and was frequently employed as a measurer of land. "
On The death certificate of Agnes Currie(his wife) in 1855, she was declared as a ' Dancing Teachers Widow,

William's son John Gregg[P457] inherited the 'Gregg Fiddle' which was passed down though the generations to somehow become 'lost' in the mid 1900's, later to be 'found again'
